After learning the working principle of the transmission electron microscope, we shall study another type of electron microscope, namely the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), which makes use of a very small electric current for viewing surfaces at the atomic scale. Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer of IBM Zurich were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986 for the invention of STM. The working principle of STM relies on the principles of quantum mechanics which are not easy to comprehend.
